Description
Jones Glacier is located in Glacier Bay National Monument, trends E to its 1961 terminus, 1 mi. NW of Johns Hopkins Inlet, 2 mi. N of terminus of Toyatte Glacier, 82 mi. NW of Hoonah, St. Elias Mts.
History
Named in 1936 by Field and Cooper (1937, p. 62) for Ernest L. Jones, 1876-1929, hydrographic and geodetic engineer and a member of the International Boundary Commission (IBC). Jones was a member of the U.S. Dept of Commercial Fisheries, 1913-15 and Superintendent and Director of U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS), 1915-20. He was the author of many publications, including several on Alaska.
