Muir Inlet is located in Glacier Bay National Monument, heads in Muir Glacier, and extends S to Glacier Bay, 51 mi. NW of Hoonah, St. Elias Mts.
History
Named in 1883 by U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS) for John Muir, 1834-1918, an American naturalist who visited this area in 1890. Born in Scotland, he came to the United States in 1849 and settled in California in 1868. He was a conservationist and crusader for national parks and made extended trips throughout the United States and Alaska.
