Former Tlingit Indian town listed as "Kutkwutlu" with a population of 125 in the 1880 Census by Ivan Petroff; reported in 1904 as "qatq!wa'altu'," meaning "town on the point of a hill," by wj. R. Swanton, Bureau of American Ethnology (BAE).
