Ptarmigan is located along Richardson Highway, at junction of Ptarmigan Creek and Tsina River, 1 mi. E of Ptarmigan Drop and 22 mi. NE of Valdez, Chugach Mts.

This place originated as a roadhouse or station on the Valdez winter trail.
