Description

Located 0.6 km (0.4 mi) west of Camp Hancock, 1.9 km (1.2 mi) northeast of the point where Pine Creek enters the John Day River; in John Day Fossil Beds National Monument/Clarno Unit. Forms the highest point of the southwest-trending unnamed ridge separating Hancock Canyon and the John Day River. A famous fossil site, the Clarno nut beds, is located on the eastern side of this summit.

History

Descriptive name for a prominent summit, made of red claystones of the Eocene Clarno Formation.
