Description

Formerly located within the City of Baltimore at the southwest end of Canton Yard and on the north bank of the Patapsco River at the entrance to the Northwest Harbor.

History

The word "lazaretto" is Italian for "fever hospital", and this was the location of a State smallpox hospital built in 1801. The Lazaretto Battery (1813-1815) served as the headquarters for the US Chesapeake Flotilla during the War of 1812. (US-T121)
