History

The word "lazaretto" is Italian for "fever hospital", and this was the location of a State smallpox hospital built in 1801. Later it became the site of Lazaretto Battery (1813-1815) and served as the headquarters for the US Chesapeake Flotilla during the War of 1812. The Lazaretto Lighthouse was constructed in 1831 but has since been demolished. (US-T121)
