Description

Approx. 160 miles long; heads on Bureau of Land Management land 35 mi. SE of Fanny Mountain, flows NNW into the Yukon Flats National Wildlife Refuge, then W to enter Black River Slough approximately 16 mi. NE of Fort Yukon; 1959 description amended to reflect mouth at Black River Slough, not at the Porcupine River.

History

Named "Big Black" in 1898 by the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS) "because of confusion of this stream with Rat and Little Black Rivers on maps." The word Draanjik is of Gwich'in origin and translates to “caches along the river.”
