Description

Sawmill Creek is located heads in Blue Lake, flows SW to mouth of Silver Bay, 4 mi. E of Sitka, on W coast of Baranof I., Alex. Arch.

History

Named in the 1890's by U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS) for a sawmill reported in 1850 by Captain Tebenkov (1852, map 38), Imperial Russian Navy (IRN), to be located at its mouth. This stream was called "Reka Medvyzhya," meaning "bear river," in 1809 by the Russian navigator Ivan Vasiliev the first; published as such by Lieutenant Sarichev (1826, map 19), Imperial Russian Navy (IRN).
