Description
Sawmill Cove is located at mouth of Sawmill Creek, 4 mi. E of Sitka, on W coast of Baranof I., Alex. Arch.
History
Named by Lieutenant Commander H. E. Nichols, U.S. Navy (USN), and published by U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS) in the 1883 Coast Pilot. So named because "in this vicinity a saw-mill was erected by missionaries to supply material for building purposes." It was also called "Ham Cove" by Sheldon Jackson for J. M. Ham who contributed funds for the erection of the sawmill in 1882.
