Description
Bamdoroshni Island is located in Galankin Is., off W coast of Baranof I., 1.7 mi. S of Sitka; Alex. Arch. 0.3 mile wide.
History
named in 1809 by the Russian navigator Ivan Vasiliev the first; published by Lieutenant Sarichev (1826, map 19), Imperial Russian Navy (IRN), as "O(strov) Bamdoroshnoy" or "Bamdoroshnoy Island." Kostrometinoff, U.S. court interpreter of Sitka in 1900, this name is derived from "podorozhnyy," meaning "on the road" or "journey."
