named in 1880 by the U.S. Navy for Captain (later Rear Admiral) Lester Anthony Beardslee, 1836-1903, U.S. Navy (USN). the U.S.S. Jamestown, 1879-90 in Alaska waters; he discovered, surveyed, and named Glacier Bay.
