History
Russian name meaning "fermented" given in 1809 by the navigator Ivan Vasiliev the first; published by Lieutenant Sarichev (1826, map 19), Imperial Russian Navy (IRN), as "Guba Nakvasinskaya." This name was applied to both the water passage and the sound until 1929, when U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS) made a distinction between the two features.
