History
Spanish name given in 1779 by Bodega y Quadra and Francisco Antonio Maurelle as "El Sombrero," meaning "the hat." This name was formally applied to its present location in 1923 by U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS); previously its application was not clearly defined and in limited use.
