Spanish name recorded in 1907 by E. F. Dickins, U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS); The name was taken from Ysla de Piedras, meaning "Island of Stones," given in 1775 by Don Juan de la Bodega y Quadra and Francisco Antonio Maurelle. Baker (1906, p. 531) published the translation Rocky Island."
