History

The name for this Nunamiut Eskimo village is derived from the name of the pass. Although the village is presently permanent, the people were once seminomadic, and the settlement periodically was moved about the valleys near the heads of the John and Anaktuvuk Rivers. They call themselves the Q"Tulugagmiut," "raven people" or "the people living in the vicinity of Tulugak Lake." The present village is now comprised of Eskimo from the Killik and Chandler Rivers also. A post office was established in 1951. (Ricks, 1965, p. 3)
