Mud Bay is located on N coast of Chichagof I. on Icy Strait, 1 mi. SE of Goose I. and 20 mi. NW of Hoonah, Alex. Arch.

Descriptive name given in 1880 by Master C. Hanus, U.S. Navy (USN), and published by U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS) in the 1883 Coast Pilot (p. 190).
