Description

In the Black Range District, heads on the E slope of the Black Range Mountains, 0.8 km (0.5 mi) E of the Sierra County boundary, trends SE for 5.8 km (3.6 mi) into Las Animas Creek.

History

Named for Victorio, a Warm Springs Apache Indian Chief who lived in the area in the 1800s. The canyon is very close to the site of a battle between Victorio and his band of warriors and the 9th US Cavalry in 1879. The Black Range mountains were one of the main strongholds of Victorio and his band.
