History

Named for Victorio, a Warm Springs Apache Indian Chief who lived in the area in the 1800s. The flat is very close to the site of a battle between Victorio and his band of warriors and the 9th US Cavalry in 1879. The Black Range mountains were one of the main strongholds of Victorio and his band.
