Description

Flows SE to join the Yellowstone River 2.4 km (1.5 mi) NE of the community of Nibbe.

History

Named for nearby Pompeys Pillar, a prominent rock formation which was named for Jean Baptiste "Pomp" Charbonneau, the infant son of the Shoshoni woman who accompanied Lewis and Clark on their Expedition of 1805-1806. A proposal was submitted in 1998 to change the name Pompeys Pillar Creek to Pompey Tower Creek. The proposal was rejected by the U.S. Board on Geographic Names (USBGN) in 1999.
