Description

Pompeys Pillar is a prominent sandstone rock formation located on the S bank of the Yellowstone River, 1.6 km (1 mi) NE of the community of Nibbe and 45 km (28 mi) ENE of Billings; in Pompeys Pillar National Historic Landmark (BLM).

History

Named for Jean Baptiste "Pomp" Charbonneau, the infant son of the Shoshoni woman who accompanied Lewis and Clark on their Expedition of 1805-1806. A proposal to change the name Pompeys Pillar to Pompey Tower was submitted in 1998. The proposal was rejected by the U.S. Board on Geographic Names (USBGN) in 1999.
