Description

The flat is at the bend of the Salt River where La Barge Creek flows into it (Will C Barnes' Arizona Place Names, Revised and Enlarged by Byrd H Granger, University of AZ Press, Tucson 1960, p 188).

History

Mormon Flat no longer exists because it was innundated by the creation of Canyon Lake prior to 1941. So named because a party of early Mormons were massacred by Apache Indians (Board on Geographic Names (BGN) Staff research). The stories about the Mormon massacres by Apaches were mythical. The Mormons brought stock to graze here in the 1880's (Will C Barnes' Arizona Place Names, Revised and Enlarged by Byrd H Granger, University of AZ Press, Tucson 1960, p 188).
