Heads in Canada and flows south 240 miles to Gulf of Alaska at Dry Bay, 49 miles southeast of Yakutat; St. Elias Mountains.

History

native name reported by Captain Tebenkov (1852, map 7), Imperial Russian Navy (IRN), as "R(eka) Alsekh," or "Alsekh River.: Behring" by La Perouse in 1786, "Jones River" by the New York Times Expedition in 1886, and "Harrison River" by U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS) in 1890. The name "Alsek River" was originally adopted by the United States and Canada in 1891.
