Description
Otmeloi Island is located in Yakutat Bay, 0.2 mi. N of Kriwoi I. and 6.5 mi. NE of Yakutat, Malaspina Coastal Plain.
History
So named "O(strov) Otmyloy," meaning "reef (or shoal) island" by Captain Tebenkov (1852, map 7), Imperial Russian Navy (IRN), because of a shoal extending off the island for nearly a mile. It was called "Shoals Island" in the 1883 Coast Pilot (p. 209).
