Named in 1914 by E. Lester Jones, U.S. Bureau of Fisheries (USBF), for Lieutenant L.B. Porterfield, U.S. Navy (USN), commander of the U.S. Bureau of Fisheries (USBF) steamer Albatros in 1914.
