History

Named in 1927 by Captain R. S. Patton, U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS), "for Chief Katlian, principal chief of the Tlingti Indians at Sitka at the time of its settlement by the Russians. Under his leadership in 1802 the Indians destroyed Baranof's fort located there. It is said the name is sometimes spelled Kotlian. The name is usually borne by the Chief of the Kitsadi Clan of Tlingits."
