Description
Middle Island is located in Sitka Sound, 5.5 mi. NW of Sitka, Alex, Arch.
History
This is an 1882 translation by U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS) of the name given in 1809 by the Russian navigator Ivan Vasiliev the first; reported by Lieutenant Sarichev (1826, map 19), Imperial Russian Navy (IRN), as "Os(trov) Sredney." The name "Ostrov Yabloshny," meaning "apple island," was published for this island in 1848 by the Russian Hydrographic Dept. on Chart 1397.
