named in 1908 by U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS) probably for Klag Bay at the mouth of which it is located. 1908 Coast Pilot (p. 172). Island" by Lieutenant Commander E. K. Moore, U.S. Navy (USN), in 1897 for "De Groff, a prominent Sitka merchant."
