History
Russian anme meaning "Japanese Island" given in 1809 by the navigator Ivan Vasiliev the first; (1826, map 19), Imperial Russian Navy (IRN), as "O(strov) Yaponskoy." given because there were some shipwrected Japanese sailors living there at the time.
