this is an 1882 translation by U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS) of the name given in 1809 by the Russian navigator Ivan Vasiliev the first, Imperial Russian Navy (IRN); reported by Lieutenant Sarichev (1826, map 19), Imperial Russian Navy (IRN), as "O(strov) Gavanskoy."
