Description
Hayward Strait is located between Sitka Sound and Krestof Sound, 10 mi. NW of Sitka; Alex. Arch.
History
named in 1787 by Captain Nathaniel Portlock, for Samuel Hayward, his third mate, who was the first white man to pass through this Strait (Wagner, 1937, p. 391). feature into two parts calling the northern part "Sukoi Inlet" and the sourthern part "Hayward." in 1850 called it "Proliv Sukhoy," meaning "dry strait."
