Rancheria Island is located between Port Saint Nicholas and Trocadero Bay, on W coast of Prince of Wales I., Alex. Arch.
History
Named "La Rancheria," meaning "the settlement," by Francisco Antonio Maurelle on "May 31, 1779,* * * because there was a stockade on it." He found it uninhabited by with a number of good houses (Wagner, 1937, p. 404). In 1923 the name was formally applied to this island by U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS); its location was previously not clearly defined, and the name was in limited use.
