Named in 1887 by Lieutenant Commander C. M. Thomas, U.S. Navy (USN) for Lieutenant Hugh Rodman, U.S. Navy (USN), member of several surveying parties in this area, 1887-1900; published in 1888 by U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS).
