History

Named in 1887 by Lieutenant Commander C. M. Thomas, U.S. Navy (USN), for Joseph Henry, 1799-1878, inventor. He invented the first electromagnet and the first telegraph. He was also the discoveror of many other important electric principles. In 1846, while professor of natural philosophy at Princeton University , he became the first secretary of the Smithsoniam Institution in Washington, organized the activities of the Institution, which included all branches of science.
