Named in 1887 by Lieutenant Commander C. M. Thomas, U.S. Navy (USN), for the U.S.S. Saranac lost in Seymour Channel, British Columbia, in June 1875; published in 1889 by U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS).
