Descriptive name given in 1869, by U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS) because of a note on map 16 published by G. A. Sarichev in 1826;" Na Gory stolb vozvyshen ot poverkhnosti morya na 150 Sazhen8" meaning "on this mountain a pillar rises 15 0 fathoms above sea level."
