Description
Near Island is located in Saint Paul Harbor, 0.5 mi. S of Kodiak, Kodiak I.
History
The name "Ostrov Blizkiy," or "Close Island" was recorded in 1805 by Lisianski (1814, map facing p. 169). The Russian word "pogibshiy" meaning "perishing" was applied to this island by Dall (in Emerson and others, 1904, p. 52).
