History

Local name reported in 1933 by Gerald FitzGerald, U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), derived from the name "Z(aliv) Makhnashka" (from Monakhinya), meaning "Nun Bay," published by Captain Tebenkov (1852, map 23). This feature was called "Zaliv Chernysheva" (from Chernichie) meaning "Sycamore Bay," by Murashev in 1839 or 1840.
