Named in 1936 by U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS) for C. E. Tingberg, a member of the crew of the U.S.S. Hassler, which made the first surveys in this area for U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS) in 1883.
