History
Named in 1880 by Captain L. A. Beardslee, U.S. Navy (USN), for Carl Sphyn, 1855-1927, of the Northwest Trading Company. He was born in Germany and came to Juneau soon after the town was founded in 1881 and operated the company's store, and engaged in mining. Later he moved to Killisnoo where he managed the herring fishery and reduction plant, and served as postmaster and Commissioner (DeArmond, 1957, p. 40). The name was published by U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS) in the 1883 Coast Pilot (p. 173).
