Shaman Island is located in Stephens Passage, 0.3 mi. NW of Outer Point on W coast of Douglas I. and 9.5 mi. W of Juneau, Coast Mts.
History
Named in 1890 by Lieutenant Commander H. B. Mansfield, U.S. Navy (USN), "Shaman" is an Indian name for medicine-man or doctor. Reason for this name is unknown. The name was published in 1893 by U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS) on Chart 8300.
