Description

A fijord which extends north from Stephens Passage to the mouth of the Taku River, 13 miles southeast of Juneau, Coast Mountains. (AK-T1)

History

Named for the Taku subdivision of the Tlingit Indians; probably first mentioned in 1841 by Sir George Simpson (1847, v. 1, p. 214) as Taco Gulf. The Russians called it "Rukav Ledyanoy," or "Icy Arm" (Tebenkov, 1852, map 8). (AK-T1)
