History
Obscure Tlingit Indian name meaning "bear fort" given in 1869 by Commander Meade and published by the US@C&GS in 1883 Coast Pilot (p. 177). Locally, the name is pronounced "Hu-che-nu." This name was also used for the rum distilled by the Indians by method learned by them from the white soldiers in the area. "Hootch," a derivative of this name, has long been used as a colloquial term for "moonshine."
