Description

Sumdum Island is located in Endicott Arm, 8 mi. SE of Harbor I., and 54 mi. SE of Juneau, Coast Mts.

History

Tlingit Indian name published as "Soundon" in 1869 by U.S. Navy Hydrographic Office; the island was called "Sumdum Island" by U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS) in the 1883 Coast Pilot (p. 168). Locally, it was known as "Fox Island" because of a fox ranch there.
