Description
Kochu Island is located in Chilkat Inlet, 1.6 mi. S of Letnikof Cove, on Chilkat Peninsula, 22 mi. SSW of Skagway, Coast Mts.
History
Name published by Russian Hydrographic Dept. (1848, inset dated 1838, Chart 1396) as "O(shov) Kochu or Kochu Island." The island was called Ventosa Island in 1869 by Commander Meade, U.S. Navy (USN); the Tlingit Indian name was said to be Gla-huts (1883 Coast Pilot, p. 167). Aurel and Arthur Krause (1883, map), however, reported the name as Jacklanissa.
