History

Named for James and John Shannon, who surveyed the area in 1892. The Shannon brothers were contract deputy surveyors for the US General Land Office, and were responsible for surveying a large part of Sublette County in the early 1890s. According to the County Commissioners, this project "expedited the settlement of that part of the public lands which became Sublette County."
