History
In 1997, West Virginia Senate Resolution 23 was passed, changing the name of the reservoir to Carl E. Gainer Lake, in honor of Carl Gainer (1915-2006), West Virginia State senator, commissioner of natural resources, and prominent businessman. However, in 2012, a proposal to change the name for Federal use was not approved.
