Description

The unusual botanical area of Big Thicket is bounded by the Sabine River, the city of Beaumont, Lake Conroe, and Sam Rayburn Reservoir. (J.H. Bounds letter/1988.). Incomplete record.

History

Probably dating from the eighteen century, this placename was applied by early Texans to a large area of impenetrable thickets in southeast Texas. The early Spanish name was possibly "Bosque Grande." (J.H. Bounds letter/1988/also 'Handbook of Texas', I, 160)
