Description

Located in southeastern South Dakota, along the Missouri River and the boundary with Nebraska, 137 km (85 mi) southwest of Sioux Falls; County Seat: Yankton.

History

Created and organized in 1862 and named for the Yankton Tribe of the Sioux Indians. Yankton is a corruption of the Sioux word "Ihanktonwan" meaning "end village". (SD-T17/p35)
