Description

Located in southeastern South Dakota, between the Big Sioux River and the Missouri River, 24 km (15 mi) northwest of Sioux City, Iowa; County Seat: Elk Point.

History

Created and organized in 1862; originally named Cole County for Austin Cole, a member of the 1st Territorial Legislature. In 1864, the County boundaries and name were changed expressing support for the Union during the Civil War. (SD-T/p35)
